2d animation

A beginner course that will cover the fundamentals of traditional animation using modern digital tools. We’ll begin with principles of 2D animation, practicing techniques like Squash and Stretch, Arcs, and Pose to Pose animation. A solid foundation will enable us to then practice physical explorations of movement and emotion, animate a walk cycle, and bring our imaginative characters to life!

3D MODELING

Learning Digital 3D modeling is a great way to empower your creative life! Whether you are creating video games, 3D Printing, Animating or making Art, 3D modeling is a essential skill. In this class we will be learning all the basics to getting started. We will be covering sculpting, modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering. Each student will learn these skills through a course long project of making a unique creature! And to celebrate everyone hard work they, will be able to take home a 3D printed mini of their creation!

3D Sculpture: Paper Maché Masks

In this course, artists will dive into the colorful world and history of masks! You'll learn different techniques for mixing paste and its application to sculpted surfaces. You'll use textural effects to bring the creatures and characters that exist in your mind into the third dimension! From start to finish we'll work with cardboard, wire, clay and paint. Come ready to embrace the mess!

Acting: TRAINING FOR MOVIE STARDOM!

In this course, students will learn on camera acting by studying and performing scenes and monologues from some of their favorite movies!

Acting: SPEEDY PRODUCTION

Put on a short play with Coyote! Audition, get cast, learn your lines and blocking, set the stage, and get ready to perform. We will take a short one act play built especially for middle schoolers, and put it up over break. Actors, designers, and budding directors are all welcome for an exciting experience that will build social skills, create an environment of collaboration, and put on a performance you won't want to miss!

Advocacy writing + performance

Do you love to lead and share ideas? Do you want to improve at advocating for your opinions?  Either way, Speak with Purpose is the fun and welcoming public speaking program for you.  In SWP, scholars explore what they value and believe through discussion and reflection, find their writing 'voice' through guided writing, play fun theater games to hone performance skills, and build supportive, collaborative community with other youth.  After a week of writing, polishing and rehearsing, camp culminates with each scholar presenting their own original speech!

Architecture + DESIGN

Design your very own park or restaurant setting! In this class, you will complete a three dimensional model and present them at the end of the workshop. You will learn how to build to scale, create community spaces, select materials, spatial planning, choose activities for our parks, and more! For budding architects and casual builders alike!

ArT OF ROLE PLAYING GAMES

ArT OF THE BOOK

Explore the world of bookmaking! In this overview, students will learn the basics of constructing various book forms and binding methods. Consideration of form, materials, and content will make for a unique final project—an artist edition series, book as object, words, images—the possibilities are endless!

BAKING Basics

In this course you will learn all of the basic knowledge needed to truly become a confident baker. This course will teach basic baking terminology, essential equipment and uses, ingredient functions, and a variety of other basic baking topics.

CLAY: EXPERIMENTAL HANDBUILDING

In this class, students will express their creative freedom through clay. Participants will learn basic handbuilding techniques and tools and use these skills to create non-traditional, sculptural, hand built works of art.

Comics: Visual Storytelling

In this class you will learn about the exciting world of comics! You’ll learn to tell your story through expressive characters, imagined worlds, and dynamic compositions. We will practice a variety of illustration and drawing techniques including perspective, storyboarding, and character posing! Just like a real comic you’ll practice penciling, inking and editing your work and in the end you’ll take home a collaborative zine showcasing all of our collective stories.

Cooking: GLOBAL FLAVORS

This course will highlight to different cuisines from around the world! Together we will get a glimpse of the world through food and learn how to make fun and yummy dishes from all over!

Cooking: SOUTHERN + NIGERIAN

Join us for a culinary exploration where the savory meets the sweet in Southern and Nigerian traditions. In this dynamic class, kids will dive into cooking and baking, using fresh herbs and vegetables from local gardens to create savory dishes and blend traditional baking techniques with the flavors of the South and Nigeria for delightful pastries. Ideal for young chefs and bakers looking to expand their skills and taste the richness of diverse culinary cultures.

Cooking: through the seasons

Explore the fundamentals of cooking while learning what ingredients are in season and where they come from. Our dishes will be created using the Capitol Hill Year Round Sunday Farmer's Market exclusively to source our ingredients. We will also discover the value of eating fresh and local through weekly "Farmer of the Week", helping connect us to the people and places our food comes from.

DANCE: IMPROV + cHOREOGRAPHY

Students will learn and explore multiple movement improvisation techniques that they will ultimately use in the creation of dance choreography with fellow students. Students can expect to learn techniques that they can use in future dance choreography, collaborate with peers, and leave with a dance piece that they created with their group that will be available in video format.

Digital art: advanced studio

Looking to take your digital art to the next level? In this course, youth artists will explore how to bring their digital creations to life in the real world. From augmented reality to projection art, students will experiment with innovative ways that tech and art combine all while bolstering their digital illustration and animation skills. This class is intended for artists who have either taken a previous digital art class at Coyote Central or have experience with the "Procreate" app.

Digital Art: ProCreate

Welcome to one of the world’s newest art forms! With the guidance of a professional digital artist, you will be guided through the ins and outs of the most popular digital drawing program of today: Procreate. In this course, you will learn how to customize the program to your drawing style to create digital artwork for use as stickers, prints, and more.

Digital Art: DREAMLAND DOODLES

In this course students will embark on a creative journey where dreams take center stage. Together, we'll delve into the enchanting world of Procreate, a powerful digital art tool, to bring our dreams to life. We'll draw inspiration from our own dreams and imaginations as we learn to play with Procreate. But our exploration doesn't stop there – we'll also dare to dream of futures yet to unfold, envisioning a world filled with possibilities and potential.

DRAWING: COLOR THEORY + eXPERIMENTATION

In this course, students will use color theory and experimentation to create color filled drawings from drawing exercises, life drawing, and their imaginations.

DRAWING: FACES, FIGURES, + SPACES

This is a drawing class for beginning and advanced students. Together we will learn to SEE as a way to better understand the world aroud us! You will build drawing skills like perspective, composition, shading. You will have access to a wide variety of tools including pencil, charcoal, brush and ink. When you work all of these together the result will be beautiful, realistic drawings that allow viewers to access a powerful window into your own personal expressions and viewpoint.

DRAWING: SKETCHBOOK EXPLORERS

Students will learn a variety of skills to gain the confidence to sketch anything they want! By the end of the course, students will have drawn a variety of subjects and be able to continue filling a sketchbook from that point on.

EMBROIDERY: STITCHED STORIES

Welcome to Embroidery: Stitched Stories! Dive into the world of needlework with a passionate embroidery artist as your guide, discover the magic of turning fabric into art through vibrant threads and intentional stitches. From mastering basic techniques to experimenting with complex designs, play with thread to unlock the joy of transforming fabric into beautiful works of art through the timeless craft of embroidery!

expressive writing + performance

Is creative writing a passion for you? Wanting to revamp your garments? Trying a new medium to paint on? Fabric painting is an excellent way to express your creative freedom and expression!

Fashion: DESIGN + SEW

Think fashionably as you choose styles, fabrics and a series of decorative techniques to make your own wearable gear & clothes. Working with a professional fashion designer who knows the business, you’ll learn the basics of design, pattern construction, hand and machine sewing, and surface treatment. The techniques are endless & the supplies inspiring. You can design and sew a jacket, bag, utility apron, costume or dress - the sky is the limit!

Fashion: soft sculptures

With fabric as your medium, you’ll learn professional fashion design and printing techniques. You’ll explore many ways to use fabric to make your one-of-a-kind creatures and plush objects. You’ll learn to make patterns, create art motifs as you create new stuffie designs, using hand-sewing, embroidery, applique and printing techniques – all from your own creative approach. You will aim to finish a project a day - after this class you will have a better understanding of 3D design, gift and toy making, and fashion design.

Fashion: sustainable upcycling

Discover the world of sustainable fashion and unleash your creativity! This hands-on class is designed to teach students the art of transforming old garments and materials into unique, stylish creations. Through journaling, sketching, and the design process, students will develop their ideas and learn to bring them to life. They will explore a range of upcycling techniques, including surface treatments such as dyeing and patchworking, as well as essential sewing skills using both hand and machine techniques. From small upcycling projects to a captivating garment, students will gain practical skills, environmental awareness, and a sense of accomplishment in this inspiring and sustainable journey through the world of fashion upcycling.

Film: documentary storytelling

Students will learn and undertake the step-by-step process of creating a documentary, such as collecting B-roll, conducting interviews, and sifting through footage to find the "gems". Through the filmmaking process, students will explore themes of self-identity and community. Realize your storytelling potential as we learn how to address the question: How can you, as a filmmaker, work with your participants to tell a story. This course is recommended for advanced filmmakers or those with prior filmmaking experience

Filmmaking: ADVANCED

Take your filmmaking skills to the next level using everything you already know about storytelling, cinematography, sound design, and VFX! Every weekend learn old school techniques & reference modern examples, finish multiple short scenes & films, and share on Vimeo & critique with each other! If you already love making movies or have made a few at Coyote before, this course is for you!

Filmmaking: genres

This course will allow students to engage in all stages of the filmmaking process, from pre production (storyboarding) to production (filming, acting) to post-production (editing). They will explore the various elements that go into creating films of different genres. Using inspiration from professional, indie, and short films that we will watch in class, they will create their own short films. Emphasis on the creative process while learning how to work with each other (collaboration).

jewelry: nature inspiration

Learn to make unique jewelry pieces inspired by Nature! You will learn and master both hot and cold connection jewelry techniques such as jump rings, soldering, wire wrapping, riveting and resin mixing. Using provided or collected natural materials such as dried flowers, lichen, feathers, pinned insects, bones, you will learn to create earrings, necklaces, brooches. We will study natural forms and aesthetic biomimicry to create beautiful metal adornments. In this class, you will foster a curiosity about the natural world and develop a collection/preservation practice of your own.

Learn traditional metalsmithing techniques to create pins for causes you care about! Express your opinions while learning a new skills such as soldering with an acetylene torch, forming, and more.

leather: DYE + COLOR

In this hands-on class, students will not only learn the basics of leatherworking but will also delve into the exciting realm of dye techniques. Discover the magic of color as you experiment with various dyes to add vibrancy and personality to your leather creations. Expect to roll up your sleeves as you safely learn to use tools such as hammers and cutting shears. During each session, you'll have the opportunity to either engage in a new project or dedicate your time to crafting a larger project of your choice.

metal: mobiles + kinetic sculpture

In this class you will learn to cut and connect and balance metal using professional metalworking tools like: saws, snips, wire cutters and drills! Together we will learn professional skills like cold processing, cutting, bending, drilling, riveting, and threading to make mobiles consisting of many balanced parts that move independently. Our inspiration will come from Dreamcatchers, Wind Chimes, and Modern Sculpture. This class encourages playful experimentation; you can even use found objects from your home in your sculpture! Before you know it you will be a professional!

mUSIC PRODUCTION

Learn to create and record your own music! You don't need any prior musical experience to start to create your own sounds and songs. This course will guide you through the basics in starting to make your own music in whatever genre you desire!

mUSIC VIDEOs

Delight in the art of making a music video with simple tools such as your phones and tablets and edit them with titles in a video editing software. Learn storyboarding, lighting, focus, and camera techniques.

origami: fold it up!

Birds! Monkeys! Boxes and Crowns ... and that's just a start! There's no limit to what you can fold when you are working with an expert origami artist who has entertained crowds across the WORLD! You will learn to think creatively and stick with it, honoring this ancient Japanese art form! Starting out with simple folds you'll move into complex triple sink origami even making cranes as small as a penny!

Amazing 3D paintings: Discover the wonderful world of optics. Using the natural wavelengths of the color spectrum paint a canvas in acrylics. When viewed through the prism-spex, one will be bewitched to see how the artworks jump right out of the canvas.

Where art and nature meet! Are you passionate about the environment? Do you love to doodle or paint? Then this class is for YOU! In this class you will work in close connection with nature. We'll make our own pigments and paint out of natural resources like clay, flower petals and charcoal. Using your these handmade tools, you'll explore the basics of shape, texture and pattern to develop your own visual language. Your visual language and intuition will guide you as you create through and with nature! Working alongside a professional muralist artist-healer you will see how nature-conscious art can really make an impact!

PHOTOGRAPHY: DARK ROOM + FILM

OFFSITE LOCATION: Take black & white photographs and print your negatives in PCNW’s professional darkroom. You’ll learn new ways to see and consider composition and light, and you will learn a variety of printing techniques. You’ll shoot street photography, people, close ups, and other subjects with a photographer who appreciates both the literal and conceptual. *Manual or automatic 35 mm film camera required! Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own creative images? In this course, you’ll learn what a professional DSLR camera can do and develop your eye for photography through fun projects. You'll learn how to use programs like Photoshop and Lightroom to enhance, crop, resize, and overlay your images. At the end of this course, you’ll go home with your own photography book of some of your favorite photographs you’ve created.

Poetry: from haiku to hip hop

Do you have rhythm, rhyme, and flow? Have you ever wanted to write poems? Join From Haiku to Hip-Hop: Writing Poetry to learn how to bring out your own voice through poetry! Warning: this class will share poetry with the world through typewriter explosions, guerilla sidewalk projects, and funky poetry-drops! We’ll write everything from haikus to hip-hop lyrics to sonnets to mash-ups! Along the way, we will learn from living BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and women poets. Join us to get your poem on!

Printmaking: LINOCUTS + BLOCKPRINTS

Dive into the expansive world of block printing! From early periodical covers to tarot cards, relief printing has been used to create unique images for centuries. You will learn to safely use professional tools like barens, brayers, and carbon paper to make one-of-a-kind prints. Over the course of the class - we’ll explore the basics of color theory and iconography while creating original cards, stamps, and other prints in your special style.

Printmaking: pOSTERS

You will learn how to generate unique and bold posters. You will safely carve softkut, a relief printmaking material, before covering it with ink and transferring the ink onto poster-sized paper by hand! You will also learn easy monotype techniques to create one-of-a-kind images showcasing your individual style. You will end the class with original, art prints you can hang on your walls, give to friends, or put in your window.

public speaking: speak up + speak out

From Dr. Martin Luther King to Amanda Gorman, Public Speaking makes a positive change in the world! Whether you aim to entertain, inspire, or inform, this class will give you the tools to ensure your work connects and lands when delivering to an audience of any size. We will use activities and exercises to get in touch with our physical body so we feel relaxed, grounded and secure. We will learn to find the range of our main instrument, learning about vocal projection, articulation, vocal expressive variety, and word choice. You will dig deep into your beliefs, dreams, fears, hobbies and passions to deliver a beautiful GIFT to listeners.

quilting: the art of coziness

Learn a skill that would make your elders proud! In this class you'll learn the basics of piecing fabric together to create quilts. Quilts consist of three layers that are stacked and then sewn together. We'll create potholders, to a lap blanket, and beyond! Bring any fabrics you have around the house if you want to make a sentimental gift for family or friends or just something to keep yourself comfy. Learn a skill that you can practice for years to come!

ROBOTICS: ROBOART WITH ARDUINO

In this class, students will gain confidence in programming and electronics with guided lessons and open experimentation. Here we will connect our artistic side with our scientific minds by creating a robot artist! With guidance, participants will wield the Arduino Uno Starter Kit to grasp electronics basics, then delve into coding fundamentals. Through hands-on projects, participants will command LEDs, buzzers, motors, and more, transforming their creative visions into robotic reality. SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION: WHERE ART + SCIENCE MEET

Are you an artist who likes bones, bugs, plants, insects, animals, and generally all things related to nature? Then this is the course for you! In this week-long course you will learn to hone in your observational skills to accurately draw scientific specimens such as skulls, insects, shells, plants, and fossils, as well as how to clearly convey scientific concepts in your illustrations. No previous drawing experience necessary. Join us in this journey to create beautiful, informative works of art and science!

screen printing: make your mark

Screen printing is everywhere! From T-shirt design and textiles to show posters and greeting cards. In this course, you will learn the fundamentals to build, expose, and print from your own custom screen. This process allows you to repeat imagery, collaborate easily, or work independently. Screen Printing is a great tool and medium for artists wanting to make a business out of their work! Once your screen is set, you will have the ability to print on ANY flat surface. We will explore everything from found objects to tote bags, fabric to paper. The knowledge gained will give you the skills to set up your very own printing studio!

sewing: zero waste designing

Have you ever had a garment that you loved, but it just doesn't work? Let's take garments and fabric we love and create something new. Oftentimes we grow out of a garment and still love the material. Or, maybe we find something at the thrift store and it just doesn't work. Regardless of the issue - when you pair the application of some basic sewing skills with the power of your imagination you can 'frankenstein' the items together resulting in one-of-a-kind fashion. In this class you will learn next level sewing skills like ruffles, ruching and adding elastic. You will learn insider tips like how to make sleeves from pant legs, or shortening a hem. Together we will create a whole new look and build a more sustainable future with the magic of zero waste fashion designing.

singing: ensemble vocal experience

Are you a singer, poet, beat boxer, rapper, or public speaker? Do you resonate with the phrase: “my voice, my body is my instrument” or “the world is my stage?” Then THIS is the place for YOU! In this vocal based class we will play with a wide variety of skills and tools that provide a unique entrypoint into the world of sound and performance. Together we will turn singing on its head. From breath to sighs to melodies and lyrics to beats this class has it all. If you are nervous, no sweat, we GOT YOU - all levels welcome!

stop motion animation

From Pixar to Laika and Disney to Ghibli, every recipe of animation requires the same core ingredients. This class you will use materials from a custom Coyote kit and tools around your house to create 2D & 3D stop motion animations. Your movie’s hero may be made of clay, action figures, legos, paper cut-outs, or even hand drawn! All characters will need your artistic touch to move + perform in the worlds you will create for them. When you get to be the director, your own imagination is the only limit in the world of animation!

video game development

Learn from a self-published independent game developer to create your own video game from start to finish using the Unity3D game engine. In this course, you will learn how to design your own vertical scrolling video game, the basics of using the Unity game engine and how to navigate its 3D space, the basics of programming using the C#(C-Sharp) language, and how to use programming to affect objects in Unity. By the end of the course, you will learn how to make a build of your game, let your friends play-test and offer suggestions, use that feedback to improve your game, and finally (optional) publish it online for others to see and play. Leave the class with the knowledge needed to make anything yourself with the power of code and Unity!

weaving: Frame loom tapestry

Learn to weave your own expressive tapestry! Artist Allyce Wood will teach you traditional and experimental techniques to weave tapestries full of texture, rich colors, and personal expressions. This class will explore the 'how' and the 'why' weaving, exploring tension, patterns, and color effects to create one-of-a-kind textile artworks.

weaving: OUTSIDE THE BOX

This class will take a sculptural approach to weaving, and encourage students to think outside the box to give new form to an ancient craft by designing looms in non-traditional shapes and weavings with non-traditional materials. This is a mixed media class that will begin with students working in the woodshop to create their own looms. Students will then learn to warp and weave on their loom, experimenting with wire, yarn and found objects to create their weavings. Throughout the week, ideas will be introduced on how to give weavings new dimension with material and technique. By the end of this course, students will not only have proficiency with the wood shop tools but also a loom to continue creating unique textiles with.

welding: ANIMAL SCULPTURES

In this class students will draw inspiration from the natural world to study proportions, anatomy, form, and texture while learning the basics of MIG welding and other key tools in the metal shop. Our emphasis will be on safety and building confidence while learning new skills. Students can expect to use hand and power tools to cut, file, bend, sand, and join steel, and to create their own steel critter to take home.

Learn the basics of MIG welding and create a chair, stool, small bench, plant stand, shelf with decorative brackets, stool, bed side table, cup cake stand...the possibilities are endless! In this fun class we will also cover general metal shop safety and learn to use metalshop equipment to cut, bend, file, sand, drill and fabricate a unique piece of furniture to take home. Plywood maybe incorporated into some designs and paint/finish options will be covered time permitting.

welding: GAMING IN STEEL

In this class, students who love games will learn how to use the tools in the metalshop to make their own games, from basic elements like dice and game pieces to complete boards, sets, or accessories for video gaming. Students will learn to weld, multiple ways to cut metal, and finishing techniques. -make dice, game boards, game pieces, console accessories like stands for screens and controllers

welding: introduction to welding

In this class, young artists get to learn cool skills in a safe, hands-on environment. We start with the basics of MIG welding, where they discover how to make secure and artistic welds. They also pick up other metalworking tricks like cutting, drilling, grinding, and bending metal to shape their imaginative creations. We make sure everyone stays safe by following some important rules and learning about safe shop practices. Towards the end of the class, we wrap up with a special final project where each young artist can use their new skills to create something unique. The class isn't just about learning skills; it's also about having fun, being creative, and feeling proud of what they make!

welding: metal fabrication

In this class, you will be inspired by other artists and fabricators working in metal and learn how to use all the tools you'll need to prepare and build metal creations: cutters, grinders, vices, and MIG welders. We will go over shop safety, basic welding and construction techniques through hands-on micro projects that develop skill and foster creative design. We will explore the possibilities of welding, joint making and basic metallurgy.

welding: OUTDOOR ART

Students will take inspiration from the outdoors to design sculptures and functional art that lives in the elements, all made from welded steel. We will learn the basics of tool use in the metal shop including multiple ways of cutting and shaping steel, how to weld, how to use a plasma torch, and how to safely use handheld power tools. We will also learn about metal sculpture with found materials and special safety considerations seen in common forms of outdoor sculpture. Students will take home one small garden sculpture and one final project of their own design.

welding: STEEL + PAPER SCULPTURES

This fun metalworking class covers basic 3-d art fundamentals including space, form, mass, volume, repetition, and rhythm. Using the metal shop equipment, students will learn to cut, file, bend, form, and MIG weld steel rods into unique 3-d forms. Then the dirty work begins as we layer paper over our steel armatures creating unique sculptures that can hang, free-stand or be secured to a wall. General shop safety will be covered and each student will bring home a desk top to life size sculpture of their own. Wheat flour and white glue will be used, please be aware of allergies and bring an old dirty shirt to wear as a smock.

wood: furniture design

Find your way around a professional woodshop and learn how to use the whole range of hand and power tools. You will design in detail and then build furniture made just for you -- because you become the custom designer! It might be a chair, a table, a chest, a pet’s house or something never heard of or seen before. You’ll build it out of wood and create a functional masterpiece of your own design, trimmed out and finished. It could last your lifetime!

You may be familiar with bright, balancing mobiles, but kinetic art also includes other standing and wall mounted sculptures with moving parts—sculptures that often invite fascinating interactions from viewers. You’ll look at some pioneering artists and their work, then use principles of design—such as line, space, and balance—to design your own unique kinetic sculpture. You’ll learn to work with wood and also the cold metal processes of cutting, bending, drilling, and riveting to fabricate wire, bars, and tubing. There will also be plastic, glass, and other materials to incorporate into your work—truly a mixed media sculpture worthy of a museum.

wood: light sculptures

In this class you will create a custom light fixture that you design—maybe an adjustable desk lamp for writing, a floor or table lamp for reading, a decorative wall fixture, or a hanging light for just relaxing in a cozy corner. You’ll get to choose to build the fixture out of wood, or you might design a shade out of wood! You’ll get access to cool tools that allow you to embellish a fabric shade, or use a stylish vintage-design bulb. You’ll also learn how to safely wire your fixture, and about lighting color temperature, so that you can choose a bulb that matches the mood and purpose of your new lamp.

wood: make some noise!

In this course we'll start out learning how to use the different power and hand tools in the woodshop to build several different types of musical instruments out of wood (whistles, flutes, drums, pianos, guitars, etc) to explore how they work, how they're designed and how they're played before working up to designing and building your very own custom musical instrument!

wood: UTENSIL CREATION

Utilizing carving, etching, wood burning you can create a custom utensil set. You can go classic with a fork, knife, and spoon or let your imagination run wild with a knoon, a knork, or a spornf!

wood + PAPER: mIXED MEDIA SCULPTURE

In this class, you will make experimental sculptures combining wood and paper. We will explore different ways of working with paper including paper pulp, cut paper silhouettes, and woven paper to add light shadow, color, and texture to wood armatures. Each student will make their own wood stool or side table coated in paper pulp and a miniature theater set in this class!

writing: flash fiction

In this creative writing class, you will write “flash,” a very short story format, from 100-500 words. Be experimental, quirky, compelling, and brief. This is where every word counts, and where readers will cheer for more.

zines: make your own!

Are you unsure what a zine is? You’re not alone! This class will explore the history of zines and zine makers from underground Guerilla Artists to Published author/illustrators. Taking a multi-media approach we will explore different ways to craft zines and bind pages. Using the foundations of storytelling and content you are passionate about we will make short format work that can be gifted, traded and shared!
