A CREATIVE RESOURCE FOR FAMILIES.

VIRTUAL COYOTE

Here at Coyote Central, we love to think outside of the box! During lockdown, we challenged ourselves to find new ways to engage from home. We invite you to come along for the ride…

And don’t forget to share your experiences with us!

We want to see YOUR CREATIVITY IN ACTION! Send photos, completed (or not completed!) projects, or anything else that seems relevant to info@coyotecentral.org

Felt Cat Coasters

Felt Cat Coasters:

By Youth Advisory Board member, Ellie Works!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 sheet of felt in whatever color you want (this will be the body of the cat)

  • Scraps of pink felt (for the inside of the ears)

  • Scraps of black felt (for the face)

  • Thread in a contrasting color

  • Sewing needle

  • Scissors

  • 1 cup uncooked rice (any type is fine)

  • A pen for marking the felt\

  • Pins (optional, but helpful)

HOW TO DO IT:

1. Draw two circles of the same size on your sheet of felt. The circles should be about 4 inches tall and as close to the same size as you can get. We used a circular object and traced it.

2. Using your scissors, cut out the two circles. Then, in the center of one of the circles draw and cut out another circle, about 1.5 inches tall. We found it helpful to fold the circle in half and cut out the semi circle. Repeat this process for the other circle as well. The result should look like the shape of a donut.

3. With the remaining grey fabric, cut out two triangles of the same size, about 1.75 inches tall and an inch in width. They do not have to be exactly that height, but keep in mind these will be the cat's ears so keep in proportion to the cat's body.

4. With your pink felt, cut out two triangles slightly smaller than the previous grey triangles. These will be the inside of the cat's ears.

5. Using your black felt, cut out a small triangle (this will be the cat's nose), and two very small circles (these will be the cat’s eyes.)

6. Sew one pink triangle onto each of the cat’s ears. Set aside.

7. On one of the donut shaped felt pieces, sew the cat’s nose and eyes into place. The placement of the eyes and nose can be done however you want. We chose to embroider whiskers with black thread on our cat’s face, but this is optional.

8. Sew the inner circles together (as pictured below).

9. Sandwich the two ears between the two donut shaped pieces of felt. It can be helpful to pin them together.

10. Sew along the edge of the outer circle, securing the ears in place. Be sure to leave hole somewhere along the edge so you can fill the coaster with rice later.

11. Take out the pins and fill the cat coaster with your uncooked rice. This can get a little messy so do it over a piece of paper or over a trash can. You likely will not use the entire cup of rice, but make sure the cat is quite full with rice and it feels somewhat sturdy.

12. Sew the hole on the outside edge up.

13. You are done! Enjoy your cat coaster. It is best for hot drinks.
